This 14-hour course is the third of five, and was designed as the negotiation component of The Mediation Training Certificate Program. Trained mediators, whose training did not include negotiation, will benefit from this course, and are welcome to register without having to register for any of our other courses.
Being an effective Mediator requires a deep understanding of Negotiation. This 14-hour course focuses on helping learners in mediation training understand mediation from the perspective of the parties they are mediating. It will focus on effective ways to prepare for a negotiation, participate in a negotiation to meet the needs of everyone involved, and writing up an agreement. The course is full of tips and practice to develop a deeper understanding of an interest-based negotiation model so you can facilitate others through their negotiation.
Successful completion of Mediation Foundations 1.1.
The objectives of this course is to build learners intuitive knowledge of what parties in mediation my need. Learners will be immersed in negotiation preparation and role plays. Therefore by the end of this course, learners will:
- Explore two Negotiation Theories
- Be introduced to Interest-based Negotiation Model with a comparative analysis to Positional Negotiation
- Gain clarity on the inter-relationship between conflict and negotiation
- Determining what is, and is not, negotiable
- Introduction to the key elements (Content, Emotion, Process) and each stage of the Interest-based Negotiation
- Prepare for a Negotiation
- Have their preparation work reviewed and receive feedback and tips on how to improve it.
- Prepare for a Negotiation Roleplay
- Conduct a Negotiation Roleplay through the use of the 4-stage Interest-based Negotiation Model.
