This is the first course of four required to meet the mediation course requirements towards earning our Mediation Training Certificate.  This is a 30 hour course with 25 of the hours spent in class online or face-to-face, plus an additional 5 hours of asynchronous work.

This course will focus on the fundamentals, including: definition, theory, mediator role and presence, introduction to the interest-based mediation model with practise and coaching.

Our objective is that by the end of the Mediation 1.1 Foundations, you will:

  • Gain a shared definition of conflict and dispute as well as the process options available for resolving each.
  • Understand the difference between Positional Bargaining and Principled (interest-based/understanding-based) Negotiation
  • Be knowledgeable of an Interest-based Mediation Model
  • Know your role and responsibilities as a Mediator
  • Have access to document templates useful to Mediators
  • Be able to prepare yourself and the parties for mediation
  • Be able to convert complaints into negotiable agenda items
  • Have practise in conducting an Interest-based mediation
  • Practise key communication skills to be effective during mediation

Cost includes: Instructors, guest lecturers, coaches for skill practice and role plays, course materials, administrative support, and access to our on-line eLearn platform which includes discussion forums for learners to share resources, ask questions, and connect with each other and with the instructional and coaching team.

If you have not previously completed a Conflict Styles Inventory, then an additional cost to complete the online Conflict Styles Inventory (currently costs $8.95 US) will need to be paid online when the inventory is ordered.  A link will be provided when you are given access to course materials.
