This is the first course of five required to meet the mediation course requirements towards earning our Mediation Training Certificate. This is a 34 hour course with an additional 5 hours of asynchronous work required between sessions.
This course will focus on the fundamentals, including definition, theory, mediator role and presence, introduction to an interest-based mediation model with practice and coaching.
Course approved by ADR Institute of Canada as recognized as meeting the training requirements towards the national designations of Qualified Mediator and Chartered Mediator and is recognized within our Certified Mediation Training Program with the International Mediation Institute for registration on their International Mediator Roster. Our objective is that by the end of the Mediation 1.1 Foundations, you will:
- Gain a shared definition of conflict and dispute as well as the process options available for resolving each.
- Understand the difference between Positional Bargaining and Principled (interest-based/understanding-based) Negotiation
- Be knowledgeable of an Interest-based Mediation Model
- Know your role and responsibilities as a Mediator
- Have access to document templates useful to Mediators
- Be able to prepare yourself and the parties for mediation
- Be able to convert complaints into negotiable agenda items
- Have practise in conducting an Interest-based mediation
- Practise key communication skills to be effective during mediation
