This is the fourth course of five that will make up the training required to meet the mediation course requirements toward earning our Mediation Training Certificate. It is a 22 hour course comprised of 18 hours in class plus 3 hours of asynchronous work on your own.
This course will focus on managing the emotional dynamic and other challenges in mediation such as, power, trauma and intercultural communication. It will also provide more role play practice mediating, with the assistance of a coach, focusing on drawing out deeper interests while managing the emotional climate.
Course approved by ADR Institute of Canada as recognized as meeting the training requirements towards the national designations of Qualified Mediator and Chartered Mediator and is recognized within our Certified Mediation Training Program with the International Mediation Institute for registration on their International Mediator Roster. Successful completion of Mediation 1.1 Foundations and Negotiation for Mediators (or equivalent)
The objective of this course is to help learners become more comfortable identifying challenges and mediating clients through some of the more common ones they may face.
Managing the Challenges
- Understanding and managing the emotional dynamic.
- Keeping parties on topic and on track.
- Shifting from Judgment to Blame.
- Using underlying interests to build understanding and collaboration.
- Understanding Power and how and when to address it in mediation.
- Understanding Trauma and the possible impact on a mediation. We will explore the guideline associated with Trauma Informed Practice.
- Understanding Intercultural Communication and Cross-cultural mediation.
