Restorative Justice, Practices, and Circles
July 23, 2019 @ 8:30 am - July 24, 2019 @ 4:30 pm
| $570.00This is a two-day introduction to Restorative Justice Principles and Theory and how those inform Restorative Practises, Processes, and Circles. On Day 1 participants can expect to explore the traditional roots of restorative relationship building, as well as the grassroots movement that brought restoration practices into mainstream justice work with victims, offenders, and communities. There will also be an exploration of how restorative justice principles have been adapted to restoring workplace relationships. Day two will introduce traditional circles and their application to victim/offender/community restoration as well as an introduction to circle applications in workplaces. Both days start at 8:30 am and end at 4:30 pm. Instructor: Paula Drouin – Paula was a member of the elite 12 person Canadian Review Panel to Review the UN’s Principles of Restorative Justice and make recommendations to the Solicitor of Canada on how to implement RJ throughout Canada. She was selected based on her work in the Edmonton Maximum Security Institution and in the Inner City with men on Parole and Probation. In the 90’s she was one of the early members of what was then known as the Edmonton Victim/Offender Mediation Program, currently known as the Mediation and Restorative Justice Centre. Paula was contracted to create the early training for volunteer mediators in the program and had also created a Restorative Justice Certificate Program for the Alberta Arbitration and Mediation Society. She has taught Restorative Justice and Circle Training at Royal Roads University and provided introductory Restorative Justice training to mediators and judges in Bosnia. She has also assessed the re-integration of child soldiers in Northern Uganda using the UN’s Restorative Justices Program lens. Paula was invited to be the Keynote speaker at one of the Alberta Restorative Justice Association Conference because of her grassroots development, passion, and experience in the field. Paula will co-instruct the second day with an Elder to introduce participants to the traditional roots of using circles processes for sharing and healing. The idea of preventing someone from registering for a course makes us all crazy, so we won’t do that. However, we need to order printing a week before the course and make final decisions about the number of coaches to bring in, and confirm the size of the classroom being rented. Therefore, we hope you will register as soon as possible (knowing we’ll be kind and easy to deal with if you have to cancel) and in exchange we will keep registration open until the day before the course. We will shut off online course registration a week before, however, you can just give us a call at 780-460-7599 or send an email to admin@adrlearninginstitute.ca to register. We will confirm your registration and make sure we have all the materials you will need when you arrive on the course date. We know life happens. Sometimes schedules change or the universe interferes with your plans. Please provide us with as much notice as possible so we can provide you with a full refund and hopefully fill your spot. If the universe doesn’t let you know until five or less days before the course, then we will give you a full credit towards another course which you, or someone you choose to transfer it to, can use within a year. If your financial situation is such that you just really need the money to be put back into your account, then give us a call and we will provide a refund less any admin costs incurred through Pay Pal or Invoicing.
